The Best Time to Go Fishing in Norway
When to fish in Norway — the winter skrei cod run, summer fjord fishing, the midnight sun and the northern lights. A month-by-month guide for anglers.
There is no single best month to fish in Norway — it depends on the fish you want and the kind of trip you’re after. A guided Arctic fishing trip runs year-round, but the experience in February is a world apart from the one in July. Here is how the seasons break down.
Winter (January–April): the skrei cod run
This is the headline season for serious cod. Every winter, the Northeast Arctic cod — known in Norway as skrei — migrate from the Barents Sea toward the coast of Lofoten and Vesterålen to spawn, and the fishing can be extraordinary. Boats land big cod, and the short, dark days come with a real chance of the northern lights overhead.
It is cold, exposed fishing, so warm layers and a good flotation suit matter. Guided trips supply the suit; you bring the base layers. Best for keen, well-prepared anglers who want trophy fish and Arctic atmosphere.
Spring (May–June): light returns
As the water warms, coastal and fjord fishing opens up and the days stretch fast. By late spring the far north sees the midnight sun, giving you almost unlimited fishing hours. Crowds are thin, prices are gentler, and the weather is easing — a quietly excellent window that many visitors overlook.
Summer (July–August): the all-rounder
This is the easiest, most forgiving season and the best choice for families and first-timers. Fjords are calm and warm, mackerel run close to shore, and long daylight means relaxed evening trips. Sea safaris from Tromsø and boat cruises from Svolvær and Henningsvær are all in full swing. If you only know you want to “go fishing in Norway,” summer is the safe answer.
Autumn (September–December): quiet and atmospheric
Coalfish and cod stay strong into autumn, the coast empties of visitors, and the aurora returns as the nights draw in. Weather becomes less predictable, but for value and moody Arctic scenery it is a rewarding time to fish before deep winter sets in.
Quick answer
- Trophy cod + northern lights: January–April (Lofoten skrei season)
- Midnight sun + fewer crowds: May–June
- Easiest for families and beginners: July–August
- Best value + aurora: September–October
Whatever month you choose, check the licence and rules guide before you travel, and see what to expect on the day so you arrive ready to fish.
